| Religious customs & traditions, folklore and legends forms the kernel of the history of Halloween. It is an ancient tradition but is celebrated by people worldover even in present times with absolute zest and zeal. Although contemporary celebration of Halloween mainly branches out from its Celtic origins but it is also colored by cross-cultural stew of other folk traditions. The word itself, "Halloween," actually has its origins in the Catholic Church. It comes from a contracted corruption of “All Hallows Eve” of November 1.

"All Hollows Day" (or "All Saints Day"), is a Catholic day of observance in honor of saints. But, in the 5th century BC, in Celtic Ireland, summer officially ended on October 31. The holiday was called Samhain (sow-en), the Celtic New year. The focus of Halloween practices has shifted over time and has become more ritualised. With a decline in the belief of spirit possession, Halloween, with the practice of dressing up like hobgoblins, ghosts, and witches has assumed a more ceremonial proportion.
