The Mexicans regard Christmas as a religious holiday. Celebrating Christmas in Mexico makes for an array of delightful seasonal Christmas traditions that is sure to be a unique and memorable experience. The Christmas celebrations in Mexico begin with Las Posadas that constitute of nine consecutive days.

During these nine days of Christmas celebrations candlelight processions and lively Christmas parties are held to celebrate Christmas. Children who dress up in various costumes on Christmas follow the procession. Shepard plays and dramas are organized to teach people the importance of the Christmas celebrations.

  • A game called the ‘’Piñata “is played. The ’Piñata “ is a pottery or paper container that is shaped like a bull or donkey. It is filled with candy and suspended from the ceiling of a rope. Each child with a blindfold tries to break the ’Piñata “ with a stick or bat. The one who breaks it is the winner. This game is enjoyed by the people of Mexico and played on Christmas.

  • Although Santa Claus is not predominant the bright red dress that Santa wears is represented by the traditional flower of the Christmas season for the people in Mexico. The flower is called the poinsettia.

  • A mass midnight service is attended by the Mexicans called the la misa del gallo. At this mass service they sing Christmas lullabies and Christmas songs in praise of Christ.

  • The real Christmas tradition in Mexico consists of setting up a nativity scene. The scenes begin to be set up on December 16, but until December 24 one will not find the picture of baby Jesus. The three kings are added on January 5.

  • On Christmas Eve begins with the last posada and ends with a delicious and mouthwatering Christmas dinner. After a sumptuous Christmas dinner Christmas gifts are exchanged among adults. The Mexicans regard December 25 being the Christmas day essentially as a family day. Children are happy to find the Christmas gifts of their choice under the Christmas trees on Christmas.
