Father Christmas wishing everyone celebrates Christmas in Chile. Father Christmas is known as Viejito Pascuero and he wishes everyone Feliz Navidad meaning happy Christmas.

  • Pesebre are little figures made of clay that are placed under the Christmas trees. Father Christmas who is known as Viejito Pascuero resembles Santa Claus wearing a white and red outfit. It is believed that similar to Santa Claus he comes in a sleigh drawn by a reindeer.


  • A few days before Christmas the people in Chile observe nine days of prayer and spiritual preparation called the novena. The Christmas Eve meal is followed by the midnight Mass of the Rooster.

  • The Christmas Eve meal includes Azuela de ave, which is a chicken soup filled with potatoes, onions and corn on the cob. The Pan de Pasqua is a Christmas bread filled with candied fruit. Christmas gifts are exchanged after having the delicious Christmas dinner and the Christmas celebrations continue.

  • Chile being famous for the Chilean wine is an important part of the Christmas celebrations in Chile. The Christmas dinner usually includes turkey, seafood and freshly grown vegetables and salads.
