Christmas Tree Story

Christmas Tree is an integral part of Christmas. No one knows where the tradition of keeping and decorating Christmas trees in homes during Christmas actually comes from. There are numerous Christmas tree stories that suggest where this custom came from.

Many legends and stories are related to Christmas tree. One of the Christmases tree stories say that the tradition of Christmas trees have arisen from Pagan culture.
Legend has it that thousand years ago in Germany, St Boniface converted German people to Christianity. Once he is said to have come across a group of pagans worshipping an oak tree. In anger, St Boniface is said to have cut down the oak tree but to his surprise a young fir tree sprung up from the roots of the oak tree. St Boniface took this as a sign of the Christian faith. In this way, Fir trees became symbolical for Christianity. However, it was not until the 16th century that fir trees were brought indoors at Christmas time.

Another Christmas tree story has it that in the 7th century a monk from Crediton, Devon shire, went to Germany to preach Christian doctrines. It is said that he used the triangular shape of the Fir Tree to describe the Holy Trinity of God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. From then on people began to honor Fir Tree as the Tree of God.

The Christmas tree story also tells about the origin of tree decoration tradition during Christmas. Legend has it that it was about in the year 1500, when on a Christmas Eve, Martin Luther was walking through snow-covered woods and was struck by the beauty of a group of small evergreens. Their branches, sprinkled with snow, shone in the moonlight. When he got home, he set up a little fir tree indoors so he could share this story with his children. He decorated it with candles, which he lighted in honor of Christ's birth. This Christmas tree story formed the basis for having Christmas trees filled with light during Christmas.
