Christmas is not all that happening in Netherlands as it is in other parts of the world. Strangely enough, Santa doesn’t visit Netherlands instead his cousin, Sinterklaas brings smiles on the faces of the Netherlanders by showering presents on them on the December 5th.This day is celebrated in glee and with great grandeur as the St. Nicholas Day who was famous for his legendary generosity and kindness.

He comes wearing a red bishop’s hat and cloak and has white hair and a white beard. He is assisted in his dealings by Zwarte Piet (Black Pete) who promptly places the showers into the hay stacked shoes, which the kids place near the fireplace before they go off to sleep in eager anticipation that Sinterklaas would fill them up with presents. Folks get together on this very Day and dine and make merry.

Traditional Dutch candies include speculaas, marsepein and pepernoten. The people of Twente in East Holland celebrate a special Advent ceremony in which special homemade horns made out of one-year-old saplings (three or four feet long) are blown to chase away evil spirits and to signal the birth of Christ. They are usually blown over wells to produce a deep tone foghorn effect. Quite celebrations accompany 25th and 26th of December when folks attend church services or settle for a quite family dinner.
