So the custom here is that just before Christmas families go out looking for pine trees, which they cut down and plant in their houses, or they buy the trees, which are brought down from the mountains. These Christmas trees are then richly decorated with various Christmas ornaments. Santa is popular Christmas icon among the children of Haiti but he is known there as Papa Noel. In Haiti instead of stockings it is the custom to place cleaned shoes filled with straw on the porch or under the Christmas tree. It is believed that Santa will place the gifts in the shoes on the Christmas Eve. Just as in most parts of the world, Haitians too take part in the midnight masses and torch processions conducted by the neighboring churches and also join together for singing carols. After the midnight mass people enjoy the “reveillon” or the traditional Christmas suppers with their family.
